Install AmigaOS 3.2 on a Hard Drive to Add Modern Workbench Support for Your 680X0-Based Amiga Computers (15-30 mins)

Task: Install AmigaOS 3.2 on a Hard Drive to Add Modern Workbench Support for Your 680X0-Based Amiga Computers

Needed: 68K Amiga Computer or Emulator, AmigaOS 3.2

Time: 15-30 minutes for install

Introduction

I have previously posted about purchasing AmigaOS 3.2 that was newly developed and released by Hyperion Entertainment in 2021 with later updates (e.g. v3.2.3 followed by v3.3 expected in 2026). In that post I covered burning new Kickstart 3.2 ROMs for my Amiga 1200. I have now completed the installation process on a microSD card with hard drives featuring Workbench 3.1.

Instructions

The procedure for installing AmigaOS 3.2 is very similar to the instructions for installing Workbench 3.1. I will assume here that you have been through the process of setting up a compact flash card hard drive, installing Workbench 3.1 using WinUAE, and are now ready to install v3.2 on top of v3.1.

To get started simply load up your hard drive in WinUAE and load the AmigaOS 3.2 install ADF file in the floppy drive. WinUAE will boot to the install disk where you can start the process.

Note that at the end of the install I had to also install the CPU support libraries which is one of the install options as shown below. This provides support for the 32-bit processors (e.g. 68040, 68060) which I was using in my WinUAE instance and will need for my A1200 PiStorm emulating a 68030 CPU.

You also have the option of installing with GlowIcons for a more modern look. I chose not to do this.

Here is a list of the new features you get with AmigaOS 3.2.

Here is a YouTube video from Amiga Bill on some of the new features. I am particularly excited about the ADF support.
