Install an Internal BlueSCSI Hard Drive Emulator in a Macintosh LC or Performa Series Retro Computer (10-15 mins)

Task: Install an Internal BlueSCSI Hard Drive Emulator in a Macintosh LC Series Retro Computer

Needed: Internal BlueSCSI V2, Mounting Bracket and M6*8 Screws, SCSI Ribbon Cable

Time: 10-15 minutes

Introduction

I have previously posted about the amazing BlueSCSI version 2 device that uses a RaspberryPi Pico to emulate a hard drive with files stored on an SD card. The unit I purchased from Joe’s Computer Museum was the 25-pin external version with 3D-printed case. Here I show how to install the internal version in a Mac LC.

Instructions

First, purchase a BlueSCSI V2 from Joe’s Computer Museum or similar seller. JCM offer a fully assembled option that comes with the Pico already soldered to the board. I bought mine from JCM at VCF Midwest in 2025.

Second, purchase a mounting bracket. I decided to design and 3D print my own bracket as I was not happy with what was out there. I offer these in black, white, silver, and the blue color shown in the photos for $10 on my Etsy store. Screws are included.

Third, line up the left and right screw holes of the BlueSCSI with those on the mounting bracket. Use two M6*8 size screws to mount the BlueSCSI to the bracket.

Fourth, carefully lift the top cover of the Mac LC I, II, or III (or equivalent Mac Performa series) by gently release the two tabs on the back of the computer.

Fifth, remove the old hard drive if there is one. Place the mounted BlueSCSI with the 50-pin connector facing the back of the computer and the SD card slot facing the front.

Sixth, attached the ribbon cable and gently reassemble the case cover.

That is it!

Comments

This is a really easy project that should not take more than 10-15 minutes. In fact, you don’t even need the mounting bracket if you don’t mind the BlueSCSI moving around a bit when you move the computer.
