Purchase a Commodore 128 8-Bit Computer (30-60 mins)

Task: Purchase a Commodore 64 8-Bit Computer

Needed: Web browser

Time: 30-60 minutes

Introduction

Riding on the success of the 64, the Commodore 128 was released in 1985 and was a much-loved successor. In fact, I have heard some say it is their favorite 8-bit computer from the 1980s. I love mine and am very happy to have it. Key upgrades from the C64 included 128KB of RAM, a dedicated graphics chip, and a Z-80 processor to complement the MOS 8502 that allowed it to boot into the CP/M operating system which is my favorite feature. Key to its success, and the reason many like it so much, is that it is almost completely backward compatible with the C64. In fact, you can boot it into C64 mode and use it as such. The C128 sold for the reasonable price of $299.

Instructions

Commodore 128s are usually available onĀ eBay for around $200 to $400 depending on the condition and extras.

Other options include Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. These are good options if there are some you can pick up locally to avoid shipping damage. Local sellers are sometimes more willing to answer questions.

I recommend picking up a newly made power supply to avoid possible damage to the circuit board. These can be found on eBay for around $75 to $100 or can be ordered from Keelog.

There is a later C128D model I will likely cover in a separate post.

Here is a TV ad from 1986 for the C128 on YouTube.

Here is a C128 video from Retrobits explaining why it is his favorite computer.
