Purchase a ViewSonic VA1655 16-Inch 1080p Portable LED Monitor for Displaying Upscaled Retro Computer Video (10-15 mins)

Task: Purchase a ViewSonic VA1655 16-Inch 1080p Portable LED Monitor

Needed: Web Browser

Time: 10-15 minutes

Introduction

I recently posted about my efforts to get an IBM PS/2 Model 30 with MCGA graphics displaying in HDMI. This required adding an ISA VGA card with upscaling using an OSSC. I noted in this post that not all LED screens would accept the converted HDMI signal. This was true for the Arzopa 16″ portable LED monitors I have been buying for use with my retro computer systems. I like the Arzopas because they are often on sale for about $60. What I did not realize is that they accept a narrow range of HDMI signals and were not compatible with my VGA to HDMI upscaling setup. So, I purchased a ViewSonic VA1655 16-Inch 1080p Portable LED Monitor that accepts a much wider range of signals. This works great. Unfortunately, they are more expensive than the Arzopas.

Instructions

Purchase a 16″ ViewSonic portable LED monitor compatible with a 60Hz or 70Hz HDMI signal. I went with the model VA1655 that I got for $110 from Amazon. Here are the frequency ratings for this model:

Frequency Horizontal: mini HDMI (v1.4): 15 ~ 82KHz, Type C: 24 ~ 82KHz
Frequency Vertical: mini HDMI (v1.4): 50 ~ 75Hz, Type C: 50 ~ 75Hz

These lower frequencies were essential for my 70Hz VGA signal.
