Introduction

The Commodore 64 comes with either a 5-pin or 8-pin DIN connector for composite or S-video out. Cables compatible with the 5-pin and 8-pin DIN are widely available for $10-$20. Another option is the nice A/V adapter designed by Sven Peterson with open-source plans available on his GitHub. This plugs into the 8-pin DIN of the later C64 models and provides an S-video connector, a mono composite connector, and left and right audio connectors.

Instructions

Purchase an A/V adaptor. These can be purchased for less than $20 on Amazon and for slightly more from other sellers such as Retro Rewind. They can also be found on eBay.

Using the adapter is quite simple. You simply plug it in and attach your S-video or composite cable. I provide a photo of the adapter in use with S-video upscaled to HDMI using a RetroTINK 5X-Pro.

Comments

I am quite pleased with the device, and it produces a nice video signal. I actually do prefer to use an S-video cable. Note there are several jumpers. The first two are self-explanatory. The third is for the chroma signal. This bypasses a resistor and results in a brighter image. My screen above is taken with the jumper off.
