Upgrade the RAM on a Classic Macintosh SE Computer (15-30 mins)

Task: Upgrade the RAM on a Classic Macintosh SE Computer

Needed: Web Browser, Classic Macintosh SE, T15 Torx Screwdriver

Time: 15-30 minutes

Introduction

I recently posted about purchasing a classic Macintosh SE. These are great Macs to own and are relatively easy to find. My Mac SE only came with the factory default of 1MB of RAM (4 x 256 KB SIMMs) which means there is a lot of software it won’t run. Fortunately, it is really easy to upgrade these classic Mac SEs to 4MB which is what I did.

Instructions

First, purchase four 1MB SIMMs cards that are compatible with the Mac SE. I got mine on eBay for $18. Compatibly includes 30 pins and faster than 150 ns.

Second, use a long T15 Torx screwdriver to remove the four case screws on the back. There are two recessed deep under the handle on top and two more on the bottom.

Third, remove the case upward with the monitor screen facing down on your surface. The case can be a little tight to get off. Do not use a screwdriver to wedge it or you will break the plastic. The key is to apply firm upward pressure on both sides.

Fourth, remove the square attachment on the neck of the CRT. Pull it gently straight off and tuck it off to the side. This is important because the next step requires pulling some connector up and if your hand slips it could hit the neck and break it requiring the entire CRT to be replaced.

Fifth, reach down to the circuit board at the bottom of the case and remove several connectors. The first is a small two-pin power connector. The second is the main power connector for the circuit board. You will need to grasp the release switch on the back while pulling up. Finally, there will be one or two drive connectors to remove.

Sixth, slide the circuit board out toward the back of the computer exposing the four RAM SIMMs (see below).

Seventh, carefully and release the plastic clips on the side of each 256 KB SIMM releasing it from the board. These are easy to break so be gentle. Remove all four and set them aside.

Eighth, install each 1MB SIMM with the plastic clips holding them to the board. Again, be gentle with the clips.

Ninth, remove the jumper just above the upper left SIMM card (see white arrow below). This will tell the Mac to expect 4MB. It is by default set on the left two pins for 1MB total.

Tenth, reinsert the circuit board into the Mac frame and reattach the connectors as well as the CRT cap. Reinstall the protective shield below the circuit board and replace the case and screws.

Finally, it is time to boot the Mac and check the reported RAM in the Finder as shown below.

Comments

This is an easy and very useful upgrade as it greatly expands the range of software that can be run on the classic Mac.

Here is a nice post with some additional information on this upgrade.
